Golf starts in your head, not your hands - Top tips for enjoying your golf journey

It's an easy game to get frustrated by but we believe the most important things about golf are fun, friendship and enjoying the journey. And for all of that read confidence - in yourself and what you want out of your golfing experience...

With years of experience under her belt, we asked Lynne of Evolv3 Golf Coaching to put together her thoughts on enjoying the game and why personal confidence is key.

Confidence on the Course: Why Better Golf Starts Before You Hit the Ball

When I started coaching women, I thought the biggest challenges would be the obvious ones. Helping someone understand their swing. Improving their contact. Teaching them how to hit better golf shots. While technique absolutely matters, over time I’ve realised something much bigger. Confidence has a huge influence on how much someone enjoys golf.

Why confidence matters more than we realise

Golf is a unique sport because it constantly challenges us. Every shot is different. Every round gives us new situations to deal with. Even the best players in the world don’t hit perfect shots all the time, yet many golfers judge themselves purely on the outcome. A good shot = success. A bad shot = failure.

But what if we looked at golf differently? What if success was about learning, improving and enjoying the process?Β

This shift in mindset is something I encourage all of my golfers to explore. The goal isn’t to eliminate mistakes because golf will always have them, but to become more comfortable with the ups and downs. Confidence isn't built by waiting until you stop making mistakes because in golf that day never comes. It's built by learning that you can deal with them when they do.

The mental game is part of every coaching session

One of the biggest things I’ve learned through coaching is that the mental side of golf isn’t something separate that we only talk about when things are going badly. It’s part of every shot: Β it’s how we react after a poor shot. It’s whether we stay present or let one mistake affect the next five. It’s whether we trust ourselves enough to commit to the shot in front of us.

For many golfers, especially those newer to the game, confidence grows through small wins. Hitting a shot they didn’t think they could, playing a hole they used to avoid, teeing off from the first tee outside the proshop rather than halfway up the fairway, walking onto the course feeling like they belong. Those moments build belief.

Confidence starts before you step onto the first tee

I often tell my golfers that this isn't about turning up looking like you've just stepped off the LPGA Tour. It's about removing distractions. If you're constantly pulling your trousers up during your swing, worrying your waterproof isn't going to keep the rain out (especially here in Scotland!), or your shoes don't feel secure on wet grass, that's all headspace you're giving away before you've even played a shot. Think about:

  • Fit – clothing that allows you to swing, bend and move comfortably without restriction.
  • Fabric – materials that work with you, whether that’s stretch for movement or layers that help you deal with changing weather.
  • Practicality – things that make playing easier, from shoes that give you confidence in your footing to protection from the elements.

The best golf clothing isn’t about looking like you belong, it’s about feeling like you belong.

Enjoying the journey

Golf is hard enough without us adding extra pressure to ourselves. There will be good days, frustrating days and everything in between but the golfers who tend to enjoy the game the most are often those who stop chasing perfection and start embracing progress. Whether you’re brand new to golf or have been playing for years, confidence grows from creating positive experiences, a supportive environment, the right mindset and feeling comfortable enough to simply enjoy being out on the course.

Because enjoying golf isn't about becoming perfect. It's about becoming confident enough to keep coming back.

And that journey starts long before you hit your first shot, it starts with believing you belong.
