Top tips for a tip top day out!

Whether you're off to a major tournament or an event at your club, planning what to wear when you're not playing can take some thought. Here are our top tips and some thoughts from players and coaches...

Whether it's unpredictable weather, the number of steps you might take over the course of the day, "looking the part", or ensuring you look smart enough for lunch in the ... it can feel there's a lot to think about when attending a golf tournament or competition day at a club. But with a little pre planning and some advice (see below!) it can be an excuse for some fun style planning and the chance to wear some of your fave clothing.

So for me, comfort comes before trying to conform, though I always try to look presentable. Comfortable shoes are a must so I always wear my trusted trainers - I wear well cushioned styles to support all day walking. If it's a warm day, i'll wear a pair of capri style cargo/combat trousers as i like pockets for quick access for phone, tissues etc. I'd match these with a fitted t-shirt or polo which looks smart but casual, nothing fancy, just one of my my favourites.  I'd likely take a wee hoodie or sweater to tie around my waist for when it gets cooler into the later part of the day. Oh and a pair of shades is a must 😎

If it was wet, i'd likely wear similar but would wear my waterproof golf shoes - FootJoy I find the best brand for me as I need wide fitted shoes and these are the comfiest of fits. I'd also make sure I have my waterproof jacket with me, I wear FootJoy waterproofs as they are stretchy so plenty of flexibility and comfort.

If the event is in Scotland - always take a small rucksack for a waterproof and possibly a beanie/bobble hat regardless of weather forecast!

Theres nothing like attending a golf tournament...taking in the manicured course, soaking up the atmosphere and being inspired by the leading players - it's a fabulous day out! I highly recommended going along to one if you get the opportunity!

I have been lucky enough to experience a few so here are my thoughts...First things first - of course there will be a lot of walking as you will be weaving from hole to hole in search of a great vantage point or your favourite players - so of course a comfy pair of shoes is a must! Whilst you could easily wear your trainers, I'd opt towards a golf shoe with a trainer style silhouette; you've got the look with the added benefits of durability and grip that's especially designed for the terrain of a golf course.

Smart and sporty yet built for performance I love a dress that's guaranteed to keep you comfortable and looking the part whilst you pick up some swing tips from your favourite golfers! A super easy option that takes the stress out of thinking about your outfit in the morning; there's no need to coordinate pieces, there's nothing to tuck in or worry about looking a little disheveled after a long day on the course.

Finally, as someone who is always on the chilly side, I'd always take a layer. As a spectator you will likely only be carrying a small bag, or backpack, packed with the essentials; water, suncream, snacks, keys etc so it simply has to be super lightweight. Check out my perfect layer below!

  • I love this navy design from Rohnisch, with the fun pleated hem and cute collar, it's something that would easily translate to my life off the course - I'd happily wear it to the office or running errands.

  • This genius design from Abacus ticks every box. It's ultra-packable, waterproof and even has a hood (which I personally prefer over a cap) so it's ideal for unpredictable weather on the course. The neat navy trim gives this sporty piece a smart, polished finish, so it looks just as good as it performs.

When it comes to spectating a golf tournament, I love creating a look that is both stylish and practical, and hopefully one that inspires others too.

In the summer, I would start with a floaty skort, which always looks really cute paired with a sleeveless polo shirt. Choosing a sleeveless style also helps to avoid tan lines on the arms while staying cool as there isn't always much shade. To finish off the look, I would add a visor for a sporty touch and a little extra protection from the sun.

Comfort is key when walking around the course, so a pair of comfortable spikeless golf shoes is essential. And you can never leave the house without a lightweight jacket either, as the British summer weather can always take an unexpected turn!

I love outfits that combine style, comfort and practicality, making a day spectating golf enjoyable, with a fresh take on golf fashion.

We hope we've helped and inspired you! Make this year the one you expand your golf social scene and enjoy tournaments and events at your club and beyond.
