Whether you're a 'fair weather golfer' or a 'nothing is going to stop you going out golfer', making sure you're kitted out with the right waterproof gear is essential.

Read on as we guide you through the innovative and fashionable ways in which you can keep dry on the course to ensure your round of golf is enjoyable whatever the weather.

Before we cover our favourite jackets here are a couple of useful pointers:

Firstly, remember that what you wear underneath will make a difference. Look for fabrics which have moisture wicking properties so you don't feel sweaty underneath your waterproof, there is nothing worse than getting soaked from the inside! Good waterproofs will also wick moisture outwards even when it's raining on them from the outside. You'll find this info in our product descriptions.

A waterproof is an investment item and most are designed for all year round use. The jacket is an outer waterproof shell generally kept lightweight and is fully flexible. For warmth in the winter months wear layers underneath instead of getting a waterproof jacket that you can only use a few months of the year. In the summer months make use of the adjuster toggles and tabs for a better fit.

The majority of waterproof golf jackets have no hood, and those that do are the pack-away style. Whilst a hood will help to keep you dry, it can potentially reduce visibility as you swing through. Waterproof hats are a great solution and we'll cover these later in the guide.

Substance with Style!

Your waterproof suit is an outer layer of weather protection designed to slip over your usual golfing outfit. When it starts to rain in the middle of the fairway you will want to get it on as quickly as possible. A good suit will have zips in all the right places to enable rapid dressing, and all the adjustable tags and toggles that you need for a comfortable, weatherproof fit.

It's really important that your personal needs in terms of practicality and function come first.  Though the primary reason for selecting a suit shouldn't be a high-fashion slimming fit, the pieces you will find on our site are designed especially for female golfers. With clever contoured panels on jackets, lots of colour choices or colourful trim, plus smart finishes to legwear, you can still feel great as you play in your waterproofs.

So how does the waterproofing work?

There are two main ways waterproofing is achieved. One method is to apply a coating over the item to effectively seal it so the water cannot get through. The most common way however is the use of a membrane in the fabric, this membrane is so fine that water droplets cannot penetrate through it but air can still escape so your body can breath.

All our jackets come with a waterproof guarantee for your added peace of mind. But which brand is best for you?

Specialist waterproof brands like Sunderland of Scotland and Galvin Green invest heavily in research and development to achieve the highest standards in waterproof performance. Galvin Green use world renowned Gore-Tex & Pertex throughout the range and this continues to set the standard for the waterproofing industry.

Green Lamb, adidas and Pure Golf waterproofs bring colours, prints and sporty styles in to the mix alongside their core ranges. Callaway have their 'tour proven' Weather Series, worn by tour players all over the world. A firm customer favourite, these come in a new colour scheme each year.

What you can be sure of through our range is a focus on the needs and wants of female golfers. Check out this option from Footjoy which is complete with an elasticated waistband that provides a flattering, shaped silhouette.

Sunderland Ladies Black Waterproof Golf Over Trousers

Waterproof Golf Trousers

There's nothing worse than a pair of waterproof over trousers that you simply can't get on without taking your foootwear off! To avoid this and other common pitfalls, here are some key things to look out for:

Make sure they are long enough to cover the top of your shoes; rain running down the outside of your waterproof trousers and into your shoes is most definitely not fun!

Buy designs with either a split for pocket access or integrated pockets of their own. Ideally you're after designs with flaps, fabric over-lap or waterproof zips. This way rain won't get into your pockets and soak your scorecard!

Good long side zips from the ankle. Hopping around trying to get your feet and shoes through the legs in the middle of the course is only going to end one way! Generous leg openings at the ankle allow a much more graceful way of putting the trousers on.

Most waterproof legwear is designed to be worn over trousers do make sure they are large enough to comfortably accommodate the legwear you are wearing beneath. This is not the time to size down if you're naturally in between sizes . If in doubt don't forget we're at the end of the phone, online chat or email, and are more than happy to provide measurements for you.

Top Tip

Waterproofs are not only waterproof but windproof as well. A pair of waterproof trousers worn over fitted trousers makes a perfect thermal barrier to keep you warm in the colder months.

Top it all off with a Waterproof Hat

Some waterproof jackets come with an integrated hood which are great for emergencies and as you walk the fairways between shots. Most golf jackets however come without as hoods can be a distraction when swinging the club. Your best bet is to invest in a good bucket or rain hat, where the wide rim allows rain to drip away from your body. You'll find some styles with extended rims at the back for extra coverage and caps with neck protecting flaps, both helpful as you lean forward to take your shot.

Looking after your Waterproofs:

You don't want your round of golf spoilt by rain getting in through your waterproofs. Regularly check them even if you have not used them in a while.

Clean waterproofs work; dirty and muddy ones can hinder the performance of the waterproof technology. Wash and clean them regularly as per the specific care instructions on the label.

How many months has your waterproof suit been living at the bottom of your golf bag? Longer term folds can mean creasing that causes the waterproof membrane to fail. Try rolling not folding your waterproofs if not hung up when storing. Check the washing instructions for your waterproofs as some benefit from a cool heat tumble dry and can work wonders for any waterproofing issues. For laminate waterproofs a wash and spray with a barrier product will refresh them. For detailed wash and care advice why not watch the video below courtesy of Gore-Tex.

Keep your hands dry - wet hands repeatedly going into your pockets could cause dampness to seep through the lining and into your clothes.

Keep your neck and cuffs well protected as these are the most vulnerable places for water to get in.

So don't let the rain stop play this season! With a little preparation and the right care for your waterproofs you can keep golfing and enjoying your time outdoors. Fancy some more inspiration on how to layer up for wet weather? Check out our Wet Weather Edit...
